Student Activities

The Architecture Students Association (ArcSA) was formed in November, 2006. ArcSA is an organization of the students of the Department. The Association, moderated by a teacher of the Department, arranges various extra-curricular activities for the students. Among these are Nabin Baran (Fresher's Reception Programme), Probin Biday (Farewell Programme), picnics, exhibitions, publication of newsletters, etc.

It is a practice of the final year students of the department to document the students' projects in the form of a brochure. So far, two impressive issues have prompted support and encouragement from all quarters. Batch 2007 previously put their effort and helped their studio teachers in publishing a book, named DESIGN STUDIO VI: ARCH 304. The publication was a small endeavor to convey what the students tried to achieve in a third year design studio and also to record the works which are very often not archived. The students of Batch 2008 published a book, named OSHTOK, a compilation of their studio works extending from first year upto third year. That was an attempt of celebrating their half way journey in academia.

Recently Berger Paints, is offering travel grants to students of the department on a competitive basis for study tours with specific academic aims.

To encourage and support students' interest in photography, the Architecture Department Photographic Society (ADPS) was formed in August, 1991. It is a non-profit, non-political organization, subordinated by ArcSA, aimed for the betterment of their photography practice & photographic thoughts. ADPS currently organizes Photowalks, Exhibitions & Workshops. In every year, ADPS arranges exhibitions as a part of the Pohela Baishakh celebration in the faculty premises. Besides, students arrange photography exhibitions on their India Tour with the ADPS banner, e.g. India: Plural, Indivisuals are some praised titles, arranged in Gallery Drik, Dhaka. ADPS also successfully participates in numerous International Inter-University Photography Exhibitions, e.g. IIUPE, organized by NSUPC , and honored by winning prizes in various categories.

Traditionally, students of the department lead the University in all cultural activities. Cultural competitions are regularly arranged between different levels. Besides, celebration of the Pohela Baishakh (First Day of Bengali New Year) is a long practiced trend, organized by the students of the department.

The Department regularly arranges exhibition of student's selected works. In addition, the students of various levels and terms display their studio projects periodically in the lounge. Events of this nature aim to generate consciousness about architecture and state of academic output among academia and people. Along with the seminar on 'Architecture Overcoming Constraints', the Department organized an exhibition at Hotel Sheraton (currently Ruposhi Bangla Hotel), in 2003 and in March 2007, another exhibition was held as part of the international seminar titled 'Architecture for the Economically Disadvantaged' at departmental premise. Another exhibition was held while hosting the international seminar on “Architecture: Education, Practice and Research”, in February 2012. In recent years Berger Award for the students of architecture, BUET is organizing exxibition of the students’ work and Seven Rings Study Tour programme is arranging Photography Exhibition regularly.

Students of the department have excelled in national and international design competitions. Student entries in Mimar Design Competitions IV, V and VI were awarded as Winners, Highly Commended and Commended. In 1989, entries secured Honourable Mentions in the Students Jamboree of Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA). In 1994, department's entry to the CAA won the First Prize. In 2006, a student design competition for a sustainable sports centre participated from a numerous countries around the world for the Commonwealth Association of Architects, 4 entries from this Department were ranked within the first 20 best entries among more than 190 entries received, from all over the world. In 2010, department’s entries to ARCASIA won top two positions and became the second winner for the “Holcim Green Built Bangladesh, 2010” Contest. Again in 2012, entries in the national competition organized by Khulna University secured top two positions. In 2015, students from second year won first prize of ICON International Student Design Competition. Students from final year won third prize of International Design Competition organized by CAA and RIBA in the same year.

Design competitions on various topics are organized by the Department from time to time for students of architecture with a great deal of enthusiasm. ''Design of the Street'' was a student design competition organized in June, 2003. Students of architecture from different universities in Bangladesh participated in this competition. The Jury included academic and professional architects and awarded first prize to an entry from this Department. The department organized a student design competition named “Dwelling Unit 2062”, as part of the 50 Years celebration of the Department in 2012. Recently the department organized an Open Architectural Design Competition for “Dhaka Bishwa Biddalay Shadhinata Sriti Shoudha at Dhaka University”, which was again participated by numerous students from all levels. ‘Urban Oasis’ is another worth mentioning Competition of the recent times in which students of Architecture Department achieved the first prize and Honorary mention.
