The Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) Degree Programme in the Department of Architecture (DoA), BUET, is designed to prepare graduates as qualified landscape architecture professionals capable of designing ecologically sound contemporary landscapes using appropriate tools, materials, and technologies. The programme focuses on studio-based learning, complemented by key theory courses, to develop knowledge and skills in landscape design, ecology, and environmental systems. Students will learn to analyse and design landscapes at different scales, understand the relationships between land, water, soil, vegetation, and human activity, and translate these into sustainable and ecologically responsive landscape strategies. Upon completing the degree requirements, graduates will be equipped for professional practice in landscape architecture and capable of making informed judgements on multi-scalar designs and working effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Successful completion of the Programme requires earning 48 credit hours across 11 courses (Table 1). The curriculum consists of two types of courses: Sessional Courses (Landscape Design Studios and Thesis Studios) and Theory Courses. The theory courses are further categorized into Core and Optional courses. The MLA curriculum is design studio-focused, comprising 27 credits for Landscape Design Studios and Thesis Studios, and 21 credits for core and optional theory courses. The sessional courses form the backbone of the Programme, while the theory courses provide essential supporting knowledge and expertise.
