Description The Meaning of Development: definitions; economic growth and economic development; various dimensions, milestones in developmental thinking. Introductions to Development Studies: origin, evolution, nature, focus, utility, and trends; the hybrid nature of this social science. Classical Theories of Growth and Development: balanced and unbalanced growth; structural changes and patterns of development; Harrod-Domar growth model, the Lewis theory of development, the international dependence revolution; the solow neoclassical growth model, the new growth theory. Basic Schools of Thoughts in Development: ideas and evolution of developmental thinking; modern critique of development theories; recent patterns of thinking on development. Measuring Development: the challenge, development indicators and their compatibility; income distribution and poverty, human development index; some structural characteristics of LDCs and DCs. Culture and Development: thinking about culture and development, culture; bringing culture and development together. Environment and Development: nature, issues, arguments, problems and challenges.
